Wondrous waterfalls in Zambia, unappreciated aspects of African nature

Lumangwe Falls

Africa’s waterfalls are one of the most unappreciated aspects of African nature. Sure the word Africa conjures up wildlife safaris, the Sahara and even political and humanitarian turmoil. But outside of Victoria Falls, there aren’t a whole lot of people who know much or anything about the continent’s other fabulous waterfalls.

Zambia is truly a bag of nature’s secrets. For instance, the mighty Victoria Falls is not the only waterfalls in Zambia. Infect not less than twenty other waterfalls are found on Zambian Rivers. A wonderland to those who appreciate the beauty and raw powerful force of waterfalls as they thunder over the rocks on their way to lower ground. Strange but true, the most beautiful, and the most unique of the Zambian waterfalls are on the border with other countries, such as the Victoria Falls(one of the seven wonders of the world) and Kalambo Falls.

Zambia as “Africa’s best kept secret” is not just a maxim. The following are the major waterfalls in Zambia. Each has its own individuality and attraction….

  1. Kalambo Falls: Kalambo Falls is a single drop waterfall on the border of Zambia and Tanzania at the southeast end of Lake Tanganyika. The Falls are the second-highest uninterrupted falls in Africa. The rare Maribou stork nests in the gorge below the falls.
  2. Lumangwe Falls: The Falls on the Kalungwishi River in northern Zambia is the largest waterfall wholly within the country. Lumangwe Falls is a miniature Victoria Falls: the smoke, the thunder and the rain nourishing a small rain forest. There is a plenty sandy beach below the falls.
  3. Ngonye Falls: In the west near the village of Sioma lie the Ngonye Falls. The volume of water thundering over the rocks is second only to the Victoria Falls. The surrounding area supports extensive wildlife, especially in the nearby Sioma Ngwezi National Park, and elephants are frequently seen by the river in the vicinity of the falls.
  4. Kundalila Falls: The Falls is found in the Central province, in an area of spectacular scenic beauty, the Kaombe River flows 70meters, breaking into thin veils, nourishing a natural botanical garden that surrounds the fall. Visitors may swim in the deep natural pool at the foot of the falls and there is a camping site nearby.
  5. Nyambwezu Falls: Located in the northwest province, it is 20meters high. There is a rock shelter close to the lip of the falls decorated with prehistoric engravings and evidence of late Stone Age occupation. It is possible to camp here.

In medieval times, people would travel through deserts, cross rivers and climb mountains for months in expedition of the gorgeous melodious natural wonders “waterfalls”. But today, they are only hours away with a Jet. Cheap flights to Zambia are easily available from all around the world. Also cheap flights to Lusaka, Zambia fly every day from London. Compliment the waterfalls sighting with other activities and you’ll experience the real Africa.
