Visiting "Klein Karoo" South Africa

Breathtaking scenery, plentiful wildlife, diverse cultures, abundant flora and fauna, South Africa is a heaven for people looking for a few days of bliss and ecstasy. Klein Karoo is situated between majestic mountains to the south and north. It’s an area of magnificent landscapes and towering cliffs, crystal clear streams and abundance of trees and indigenous flora-all contribute to making the Klein Karoo one of the Western Cape’s most diverse regions.

Majestic mountains lend a blue haze to the distant horizon and spring flowers draw huge number of tourists from all over the world for a few weeks every year when sand becomes a tapestry of flowers.

The main town of the region is Oudtshoorn. It is known as "The feather capital of the world" because of the flourishing ostrich industry. Visitors to Ostrich farms can experience flock movement, feeding, and breeding, feather plucking and riding on the big bird. It is also a wonderful exciting halfway stopover when traveling between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. First class hotels, lodges, inns and guesthouses await the visitors. Enjoy the relaxed, hospitable atmosphere offered in town or at various surrounding farms. Other towns and settlements includes Ladismith, Calitzdorp, De-rust and famous mission stations such as Zoar, Barrydale, and Düsseldorf.

The Klein Karoo is probably the most diverse South African wine region. Known as the port capital of South Africa they offer undiscovered gems that produce some of the countries best port, muscadels and brandies along with other fortified and regular red and white wine cultivars. This wine producing region forms part of the Cape’s Route 62 and visitors to the region are sure to leave with warm memories. More than just an excellent range of wines, the Klein Karoo Wine Route offer visitors its unique cuisine, warmth and hospitality of its people, and the mystique of its landscape.

If you have been a little over-indulgent in the wine lands- than Simonskloof mountain retreat and Gecko Trail is the place to work it off. Plenty of exercise in stunning rocky Karoo surroundings, hiking trails, biking trails, Kloofing, abseiling and geo-caching are all popular activities.

Other highlights of the region include the Cango Caves, the Swat berg pass, Meiringspoort Gorge at De Rust. Nature reserves in the Klein Karoo includes the Doringriver wilderness area near oudtshoorn, the Gamkeskloof Nature Reserves near Calitzdorp, Rust-en-Vrede waterfalls, the Anysberg Nature Reserve near Ladismith and the Swatberg area linking Klein Karoo to the Groot Karoo. The annual Klein Karoo National Arts Festival draws thousands of people each year.
