TRAVELLERS to Northern Ireland are being warned to be cautious following renewed dissident activity in the province. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Australia has reissued its travel advice for the United Kingdom, advising Australians to stay away from demonstrations that could turn violent.
Three murders within 48 hours have raised fears that the province was about to slip back into the violence that raged for more than three decades until peace accords in 1998 led to Catholic-Protestant power-sharing. "Following these incidents there is renewed concern of possible dissident activity and sectarian violence in Northern Ireland," DFAT said on its smarttraveller website. "Australians could inadvertently be caught up in violence directed at others."
