Travel Africa : A visit to desert Island in Botswana, Kubu Island

kubu_island

Botswana, a land of diverse beauties, is ideally located in the heart of Southern Africa. Botswana, s most popular landmarks and monuments range from a group of large baobab trees to giant size footprints fossilized in the rock. Kubu Island is one of such National Monument and is considered sacred site by the indigenous people of the area. In the southwest of Sue Pan lies an isolated granite outcrop, some 10 meter high and a kilometer long, known as Kubu Island. It is the oldest rock formation in Southern Africa and though the millennia has seen the comings and goings of extinct seas and deserts, ancient salt mines serve as a remote outpost of a long-forgotten civilization.

Kubu Island, with its fossil beaches, stunted baobab trees and mysterious stone walls, leaves an incredible impression upon all who visits its water-worn shores. It has been an attraction for birds and humans from as far back as the Stone Age. It is close to what is probably the biggest and greater flamingos breeding site in the world.

Archeological recovery in Kubu Island has revealed the presence of pre-historic humans through abundant finds of stone tools; some of these tools have been dated sufficiently early to establish their origin as earlier than the era of Homo sapiens.

A trip to Kubu Island gives a chance to truly understand the Pans, how they were formed as well as the history-both recent and Stone Age. You will experience a sense of true adventure, as the Pans are the size of Switzerland, a fact that is difficult for many to comprehend.

It is accessible by four wheel drive vehicle-best for an outdoor enthusiast, and basic camping facilities exist. Three traditional taboos surround the island: no hunting of wild animals, no collection of wild fruits, and no removal of the island’s rocks.

Kubu Island is one of the most beautiful places in Botswana, and therefore it should be visited by everybody travelling to Botswana. Also with more affordable and cheap flights to Botswana made available with a large number of low cost airlines, travelling to Botswana can fit any budget!
