The flight scene keeps changing every now and then in Zimbabwe. At times it is the governments, at times the crippling economy but there is a huge dependency on one direct airline that creates problems of a limited choice and shortage of seat availability. As soon as British Airways stopped operating it’s services from Harare, there was but only hope for it to be replaced by an equally popular and reliable airline.
Cheap flights to Harare, ever since are offered by Air Zimbabwe. Air Zimbabwe is the proud ‘flagship’ carrier that offers not only cheap but direct flights to Zimbabwe. Yet, as there are only "twice weekly" flights with this carrier, there sure remains the vacuum for another daily flight operator .
Let’s first discuss the market type. In Zimbabwe, we should not forget the strategically location and bordering countries that are connected and given an easy access to western flyers through Zimbabwe. A simple comparison is that of flights to Victoria falls. Victoria falls is a top African attraction and seventh wonder of the world. It’s a ‘Victoria falls fever’ out there among travelers and holiday makers. This one place, if reached with flights via Johannesburg costs a different airfare and airport tax while if, you take flights via Zambia or the road route from Lusaka that may rather be more expensive. Yet, the cheap air fares via Harare enable us to get altogether a better deal and bigger saving.
Quite similarly, flights to Harare Zimbabwe from London (Heathrow or Gatwick) provide for a whole ‘market in itself’ of immigrants and settlers from Zimbabwe. Here, let’s not forget that Zimbabwe is one of the ‘thirty most traveled’ destinations from the UK.
Yet another huge market of travelers to Zimbabwe comprises that of Businessmen, Entrepreneurs and opportunity seekers. Zimbabwe is the former called "Breadbasket of Africa".
With only a few available choices among airlines and especially Western or star alliance carriers the rise and fall of Zimbabwe Air Industry is quite unsteady. There is a humongous need for a new and more promising airline to jump in and bring back the good old days for Zimbabwe.
