Mount Maunganui is a surfer’s paradise in real sense and meaning. It’s a spot that every surfer deserves to visit once in his life. There are a million reasons for that. In Tauranga, Mount Maunganui is situated on the peninsula to the north of the city centre in the Bay of Plenty. According to the Maori legend the hill is believed to be once a slave (Pononga) to the mountain called Otanewainuku, although today its locally called the “big hill” (Maunganui). For the surfers, Mount Maunganui remains “the hill” that rises above the town and crowns the beach.
With the completion of the harbor in 1988, Mount Maunganui is coupled with the city of Tauranga. Mount Maunganui is circled around by a small town on the same name bordering the main city Tauranga. The small town spread on top of a sand bar, connects Mauao to the mainland and due to its splendid geographical location, the region not only offers a surfing beach but also a harbor beach known as Pilot bay, located only blocks away.
Apart from a million spectacular views, scenic locations, heavenly landscapes and a town full of welcoming newzies, Mount Maunganui’s specialty remains “the Northern Surf Championship” competition (NRC’s).
