According to a recent report on Sky News, Birmingham airport has been forced to close following a minor “incident” on the runway. The airport’s website confirms that all flights at Birmingham airport are currently suspended and Passengers due to travel Saturday evening are being told to contact their airlines for further guidance.
The reason for immediate airport closure is said to be a ‘rough landing accident’ involving a light aircraft that was landing at the airport earlier in the morning today. The accident has left two people injured. A spokesperson for Birmingham airport said the Cessna had hit an antenna, which was part of the Instrument Landing System (ILS), at around 3.30pm. At the time, the airport was wrapped in thick fog that caused widespread disruption to travelers, halting all arrivals and departing flights and prompting gridlock on roads surrounding the airport. For the reason, the airport will remain closed until at least noon on Saturday; further updates will be released from time to time.
The plane was carrying a transplant organ (liver) that was safely delivered to Queen Elizabeth hospital earlier today. Chief Inspector Matt Markham, of West Midlands Police, told Sky News:

The airport’s website says that anyone due to travel should contact their airline for further guidance as some flight disruption is expected. Many top International and UK based airlines offer flights from Birmingham Airport to worldwide destinations including flights with Emirates Airline, Scandavian Airline, British Midland Airline, Flights with KLM, Lufthansa and Swiss Air.
