Las Vegas Nevada – Quick Facts

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. But the only thing that does not is its popularity.

Every year, there are millions of travelers and hundreds of flights to Las Vegas, the city is crowning beauty for America. It is, what we can call “the true 21st century cosmopolitan attraction”. Here are some quick facts:-

  • On May 15, 1905, 110 acres of land in downtown Las Vegas were auctioned off, marking the occasion as its “Birth Day”, Las Vegas is now 105 years old!
  • Only a year after its birth (1906), the first Casino to open in Vegas was “The Golden Gate Hotel and Casino”.
  • It may come as a shock to you that “legalized gambling bill” was only approved in 1931, from 1910 to 1931, gambling remained illegible in Las Vegas.
  • The city’s first Dam “Hoover Dam” took a total of 21,000 men to complete the ‘five years project’ in 1935.
  • Vegas’s first racially integrated hotel opened in 1955, 50 years after the city’s birth.
  • Vegas is also the trend setter for “topless girls”. The first top less girls debuted in 1957 on Las Vegas strip in “Minsky’s Follies” at the Dunes. The Las Vegas strip is for the most part, not within the city limits of Las Vegas. The majority of the strip is located within Clark County.
  • Vegas’s very popular “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign was created in 1959 by Betty Willis.
  • In 2009, Las Vegas hosted more than 19,000 conventions.
  • Las Vegas is home to the fifth largest school district the “Clark County School” where more than 311,000 students are enrolled.
  • United stated fifth tallest building and Mississippi’s tallest, “the Stratosphere Hotel and Tower” (100 feet approx) is also here.
  • In Nevada, getting married does not include blood tests or waiting time. Anyone can get married any time (and this happens a lot). A marriage license in Nevada costs around 60 US Dollars.
  • The famous “Fremont Street”, closed to traffic in 1994 was reopened from December 1995.

In the 70’s only 6.7 million people visited Las Vegas, while in 2009, more than 36 million people came to have the unadulterated and unlimited fun Vegas has to offer. In comparison to other holiday destinations of the same stature, Las Vegas is a paradise for budget travelers. There is a bucket full of airline that offer cheap flights to Las Vegas Nevada, almost throughout the year, but to save money always make advance reservation in hotels and flights.
