Issuance of Passport to Reopen Shortly in Zimbabwe

The Zimbabwean Government’s passport facility damaged by a New Year’s Eve fire at its document facility in an army base in Harare is said to resume full operations shortly.

According to voanews.com Zimbabwe, Co-Minister of Home Affairs Theresa Makone toured the damaged facility on Wednesday and said operations at the documents production facility of the Office of the Registrar General should resume within days.

In the current scenario, when speculators expect Zimbabwean elections in midyear, the issuance of residency permits to large numbers of Zimbabweans would allow them to travel home more easily and cast vote in the elections.

Zimbabwe’s Office of the Registrar General could resume issuing passports next week possibly, if repairs go as planned.

As reported by Talkzimbabwe.com, Zimbabwe’s consul-general in South Africa, Chris Mapanga, has denied reports that the passport production centre in Harare was gutted by fire and holds electric fault to be responsible for the chaos.
