Nigeria : Important things to remember for first time visitors

Nigeria is an amazing though ignored country. The warm beaches of Nigeria, if developed are no less than the holiday paradise of Durban. The good news is, that it is a very less expensive and perfect destination for those with strict budgets and most importantly, it opens an entire new experience for travelers with its rich and colorful traditions, festivals, events, inspiring history and warm beaches.

Flights also, like accommodation and the rest, are inexpensive. The biggest reason is that many Nigerian settlers in UK make a big number of annual tourists / visitors to Nigeria. But before you heed on to Nigeria, there are a few things you should care about:-

  • Upon meeting or departing do shake hands! You will find Nigerians very welcoming and pleasant. Men may place their hand on the other person’s shoulder during a handshake. Also while exchanging greeting, inquire about the person’s family and health.
  • Avoid shaking hands with women, unless they are offering you themselves.
  • Elderly are well respected and obeyed. You should lower your eyes or bow when meeting an elder to show respect.
  • Traditionally, In Nigeria people eat with their hands. Tourists are given finger bowls and towels to keep clean (Though you can ask for utensils or keep some in your bag). Eating with left hand, passing or receiving food with it is considered unclean.
  • If you are women, abstain from wearing revealing clothes. Men are encouraged to wear suits on dinners or business functions. Wearing shorts at restaurants of functions is deemed unethical, through feel free for any thing on the beach or recreational / social functions.
  • In Nigeria leaving Tips for the waiters is not necessary. But if you can not help it, than leave 5%.
  • Bring gifts, especially for children as they will be expecting it form you. If you are a man giving a gift to a woman or a child, it is a good gesture to say that the gift came from a female relative such as mother, wife or aunt. Like food, do not use left hand to pass the gift or take one. Fruit, nuts, or chocolate are ideal gifts if invited to a Nigerian’s home.
  • Eye contact with a smile or polite expression is ok for males. However avoid too much eye contact as it may look ordering or instructive. Females, should keep a nice balance in their expression neither too friendly nor too bossy.
  • While Shopping don’t be shy to bargain. Do haggle at a market as you can usually get the price down by 50%. However, don’t try to bargain for bread. Bread prices are fixed.
  • Don’t walk away without buying something after you’ve agreed on a price with the merchant. It’s very rude.
