Festivals in Nigeria – A Place of Celebrations

Nigeria is unprecedented a country with impressive history, rich culture and vibrant festivals. It is a kind of country that is widely known for its festivals that are celebrated ancestrally. The various festivals of Nigeria are celebrated throughout the year with gaiety, vibrancy and electrifying passion which fills up the air with colors and happiness. Some of the eminent Nigerian festivals are Argungu Fishing Festival, Durbar Festival and Benin Festival.

Argnugu Fishing Festival is one of the most famous cultural festivals in Nigeria, and is celebrated to mark the beginning of fishing season in Argnugu, Kebbi state. It involves challenges like bareheaded fishing, wild duck hunting, swimming, diving, wrestling, arts and crafts exhibition, and traditional music and entertainment. About 5000 men take part, armed with hand nets and a large gourd. During the allotted time, they fight for the fish in river. The festival is celebrated every year since 1934.
Durbar Festival is celebrated at the culmination of the two great Muslim festivals Id el Fitri and Id el Kabir. It begins with prayers, followed by a parade of the Emir and his entourage on horses, accompanied by music players and ending at Emir’s place- drumming, dancing and singing continue into the night. It is celebrated in several cities of Nigeria such as Kano, Katsina and Bida. It depicts the past glory of emirate before the influence of western culture.

Benin Festival is held at the end of rainy season after the harvest has already been gathered. This festival also serves another purpose as the eligible young men and women of the village are displayed before each other to be able to get acquainted with each other. Both boys and girls have elaborate markings painted on their bodies. The boys also take part in a tug-of –war as a demonstration of their strength.

For tourists, it’s a miracle to visit the country during the festival’s time, as it is regarded as an absolute and sacred way of matchmaking. Also cheap flights to Nigeria from London are easily available during and close to the time of festival.
