Cruise liners maintain course despite swine flu outbreak

MAJOR cruise companies operating between the United States and Mexico have not suspended or changed their routes due to the swine flu outbreak that began in Mexico, the Miami-based companies said. ”There are currently no reported cases of swine influenza on Carnival ships or in any of the ports that we visit in Mexico,” Carnival Cruises said.

”We do not anticipate that our guests’ cruise experience will be impacted by this type of illness and will not be making any adjustments to our itineraries at this time.” The Royal Caribbean cruise company said it is closely monitoring developments with the virus outbreak, which has likely killed up to 149 people in Mexico and sickened 44 people in the United States.

”None of our sailings have been altered and none are scheduled to be,” the company said, adding that its ships visiting Mexico are providing outbreak information to guests and supplying hand sanitizers throughout their vessels. Norwegian Cruise Line said its onboard medical centers were “stocking an appropriate amount of the anti-viral medication used to treat the illness, in the unlikely event the need for its use becomes necessary.”
