Cape Coast town is capital of central region of Ghana. It is situated 165km west of Accra on the Gulf of Guinea. The city has a long history and is actually one of the most historical cities that you’ll find in the country of Ghana today. From the 16th century the city has changed hands between the British, the Portuguese, the Swedish, the Danish and the Dutch.
Cape Coast was the largest slave-trading centre in West-Africa and it only becomes apparent after a visit to a massive Cape Coast Castle, in the heart of the town, overlooking the sea. Cape Coast Castle was originally built by European traders in the 17th century. It became a staging point for the Atlantic slave trade of the British. Today it is the superb and moving Museum of Slavery and caters to the increasing number of African Americans who arrive searching for their roots. A guided tour is offered and should not be missed; allow a minimum of an hour for the tour.
The town’s symbol is a crab and a statue of one lies in the city centre. If you want a tropical experience visit Elmina beach just outside of Cape Coast. It is very clean and fairly quite you can enjoy it with your loved one.
Go to Kakum National park and take a walk on famous canopy walkway. You can also find birds, snakes and many species of bugs. This forested parkland makes for a great day hike with fantastic views, especially from the wooden suspension bridges that soar a hundred feet overhead and gives you a bird’s eye view of the forest.
As the capital for the Fante people, the culture is rich and you’ll find that they love their festivals. Some of the top festivals you’ll experience in this city include the “Panafest theatre festival” (activities include performances and work in the areas of theatre, drama, music and poetry) as well as the “Oguaaa Fetu Afahye harvest festival”. During Fetu festival rituals are held, dances are danced and foot is consumed. A bull is also slaughtered for purification and on Sunday, a Church service is held and thanks are given to God for helping the people through the year.
This town has everything you’d want for a good time nature, tropical, historical and also many shops and festivals. This is your ideal town for your next visit to Ghana.
