The Train services launched at the Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport, Thailand aimed at shortening the distances between the airport’s terminals is expected to benefit more travelers in 2011 in comparison to last year. As in 2010, the lack of information on this new service remained a major obstacle in increasing its use by regular travelers.
Suvarnabhumi Airport’s Link began commercial services in August 23, 2010 after long delays in construction and several test runs. The launch of the services was marked by offering special discount fares offered in the year 2010. The service targets at shortening travel times for inbound and outbound air travelers as well as easing arrivals and departures compared to existing airport transport.
This line is built by a consortium of B Grimm, STECON and Siemens, and is owned and operated by State Railway of Thailand (SRT). The estimated cost of the project is 25.9 billion baht. The Airport Rail Link puts Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport only 25 minutes away from Bangkok new City Air Terminal at Makkasan Station.
Recently, Thai Airways International and Bangkok Airways have also opened their check-in counters for passengers, about five months after the opening of the Airport Rail Link by dint of which, air travelers can now check in for their flights out of Suvarnabhumi Airport and hand over their heavy luggage at the same time, avoiding the hassle of the busy airport 12 to 3 hours before the departure time of the aircraft. Check-in services are however available from 7 am to 9 pm only.
In 2010, Thailand hit a new record in International arrivals and flights to Bangkok as well as flights to Phuket the beach destination of Thailand, have been increased by many International carriers.
