Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority is warning airline passengers to keep their seatbelts fastened during flights, as a precaution in the wake of an incident on the international carrier Qantas flight earlier this month.
More than 70 passengers and crew were hurt, some seriously, following a sudden loss of altitude on the flight from Singapore to Perth.
CASA’s chief executive officer Bruce Byron says while an investigation into the incident is continuing, evidence suggests many of those who were hurt were not wearing seatbelts at the time.
He says in accordance with airline policies, passengers should remain buckled up unless they have to move around the cabin. He’s also urged passengers to pay attention to safety briefings given by the crew at the start of the flight.
