Thermal scanners at Adelaide Airport

SA Health is waiting for federal approval before it can use thermal scanners to help detect swine flu among incoming passengers at Adelaide‘s International Airport. The Federal Health Minister, Nicola Roxon, says eight international airports around the country will have the technology.

But the Australian Health Protection Committee will need to formally recommend use of the scanners. They were sent on Wednesday to the airports and will be ready, if needed, for the first incoming international flights on Thursday.

South Australia‘s chief medical officer, Paddy Phillips says local health staff are on standby. "As soon as those precautions are in place and we’ve got the scanner in place, we already have the nurses ready to go and so that will happen as is the plan," he said. "Up until the Federal Minister announced the precautions at all airports we haven’t had any flights from the countries concerned. "But now that the situation is changing, those precautions will be activated as the Federal Minister has announced."
