TAAI asks its members to boycott KLM, Air France and North West Airlines with immediate effect

Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI) at its national meet held in Delhi on Monday and Tuesday gave a call to its membership across the country to boycott three foreign airlines with immediate effect, which have out right rejected the ‘Transaction Fee’ model for travel agents. The three airlines to be boycotted are KLM, Air France, and North West. Announcing the decision, Rajji Rai, President, TAAI said that out of 14 airlines with which TAAI has been holding discussions for the last three months, while Air India, Jet Airways, Kingfisher and Singapore Airlines agreed to include a Transaction Fee in the printed fare from November 1, the date on which the zero-commission regime came into force, eight others rejected the demand for a Transaction Fee module.
“Out of eight, these three airlines have replied back in five minutes with an out right rejection of the proposal. We have pleaded and pleaded with airlines and tried to convince them this is the wrong time to implement zero commission as the aviation industry is in turmoil and the agents contribute 80 to 85 per cent of the business,” said Rai. When asked about whether the members would accept this boycott, Rai said, “The leadership was holding back the members for last three months from going into direct confrontation. Our members are agitated. They understand there’s nothing below zero per cent,” he stated. On being quizzed about the decision for boycotting only three airlines, and not all eight airlines, Rai said that the Association was yet to receive communication from others about their stand on Transaction Fee. The airlines which are still to revert back to TAAI are Air Canada, Lufthansa, Qatar, Continental, United, etc.
Rai also said that agents are not satisfied with the Transaction Fee module being implemented by Air India and other three airlines.  “There are issues of cut and payment, which currently are not in place and the entire payment is lodged with airlines by the agents and a credit note will be issued after the billing cycle is complete. This is not acceptable to us,” he added. To a question on seeking support from other associations, he replied that Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI) has a similar stand on the issue.
