[ Swine Flu ] Airlines offer alternative arrangements

British Airways is among seven airlines allowing passengers to reschedule their flights to Mexico in the wake of the worsening Swine Flu outbreak. The flag carrier is still operating four weekly flights to the country, unlike Thomson, Thomas Cook and First Choice – which have cancelled their services until May 8.

All non-essential travel to Mexico is now being advised against by the Foreign Office. Responding to situation, BA said that customers due to fly to Mexico from London Heathrow Airport can postpone their trip or switch to an alternative destination. The airline is joined by Iberia, United Airlines, American Airlines, KLM, AeroMexico and Mexicana – all of whom are allowing travellers to re-book their tickets without charge.

People who have booked a package holiday are also advised to reconsider their plans, with the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) vowing that its member operators will help customers make alternative arrangements or collect a refund. Holidaymakers already in Mexico should contact their tour operator immediately. If they return, they will be entitled to a refund on unused services such as accommodation.

The Swine Flu outbreak has so far claimed 159 lives in Mexico, and earlier today America recorded its first fatality from the virus – a two-year old child in Texas. Cases have been reported as wide apart as Germany, Israel, New Zealand and Britain, where five people are now known to have contracted the disease.
