Stansted Airport has encouraged its passengers travelling back to the UK to make use of "queue-busting" facial recognition technology that is currently being used at arrivals gates. The systems – which can be used by any British or European passenger who has a new passport with an electronic chip – are being trialled as a method of improving border security while cutting queues.
Travellers simply have to stand in front of a machine that scans their face and checks the image against their passport photo before allowing them to pass through an automated gate. Stansted Airport has been trialling the technology since December last year and there are plans to extend it to ten more UK terminals in August.
Barry McGill, assistant director for the UK Border Agency at the airport, said: "My message to passengers travelling through Stansted is simple. If you hold one of the new biometric passports, please take advantage of these gates and help to reduce the time you spend at passport control. "You don’t need to register. All you need is a biometric passport issued since 2006." Travellers can access an international route network at Stansted Airport that includes flights to Amsterdam, Barcelona, Munich and Naples.
