The machines allow customs officers to view images of passengers’ bodies through their clothes, and are already in use across the UK. The EU will establish an inquiry into whether the scanners compromise the fundamental rights of citizens.
The study will also investigate possible medical side effects. The scanners are being trialled in the Australian cities of Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide.
