Bristol airport wins clearance for expansion

Bristol airport has won clearance to almost double the number of annual passengers it handles. The green light came as BAA dropped plans to build new runways at Heathrow and Stansted following opposition by the new Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government.

Bristol airport has won local council approval to expand to increase passenger numbers from six million to 10 million by 2019-20. The expansion plans is to be focused around the existing site and not involve an additional runway or terminal. The development will create more than 3,500 jobs and drive increased expenditure in the South West by overseas visitors of £1.1 billion, according to the airport.

Expansion will allow the airport to attract new worldwide flights with potential destinations including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Washington, Atlanta, Toronto, Singapore, Istanbul, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Munich, Dusseldorf and Zurich.

Stansted managing director David Johnston said: "We have reflected carefully on the new Government’s clear intention to change its airports policy and have moved quickly to withdraw this application."
