Interpol has been asked to solve the bizarre puzzle of an Italian traveler who breached Melbourne Airport security by joyriding on a truck across runways and into secure areas. Through an interpreter Croce Scarpello, 31, told a magistrate today he is happy to remain in custody and he does not want anyone to contact his family or friends in Italy.
The international man of mystery boarded flight to Sydney with just 87 euro in his pocket and flew on to Tullamarine. Nothing is known about his background or why he committed the offence. Prosecutor Matthew Sinnett told Melbourne Magistrates’ Court that the Australian Federal Police does not believe Scarpello poses a security risk.
But he said Interpol in Rome had been contacted to find out if he had any prior convictions or history of mental illness. "They are notoriously slow,” Mr Sinnett said. At his first court appearance his lawyer Rachel Dransfield said Scarpello came to Australia in November last year, stayed a day and then went back to Italy.
On July 24, Scarpello climbed a barbed wire fence, stole Virgin staff overalls and a vehicle and went drove randomly around the restricted areas of the airport. Scarpello has pleaded guilty to single counts of reckless endangerment at a Commonwealth airport and theft of a pair of Virgin airlines overalls. The case has been adjourned until September 9 and Scarpello was remanded in custody.
