LUXURY Australian hotels have cut rates by almost 80 per cent in a bid to lure customers. Five-star boutique hotels in destinations such as Sydney and Brisbane are offering up to 78 per cent off normal rates. Hefty discounts are also available on hotels in Melbourne, Adelaide and Hobart . The Crowne Plaza Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast is offering 73 per cent off some rooms.
Australian Hotel Association spokesman Hamish Arthur said the hotel industry had seen average room rates fall by $8 since last year. "Our research shows that for major hotels across the country it has been tough going and the hotel business climate has become increasingly challenging," said Mr Arthur. "Average room rates have dropped off, with hotels across the eastern seaboard and Adelaide most affected."
"The sale gives us a platform to give exposure to the hotel at a competitive rate," said BLUE Sydney sales director Ben Johnson. "Once people have experience it, and the rate is bought back to our normal selling rate, people will still come back because they can see the value and the experience of their stay at BLUE."
Wotif.com spokesperson Brooke Carter said the offers were discounts on already discounted hotel rates. "The deals can be booked up to 29 July, so that gives people plenty of time to work out when they want to get away," said Ms Carter. Mr Arthur said offering holidaymakers discounted rooms was the best way to help the industry.
"The way we have seen major hotels offer spot sales has been very intelligent and there are small windows of opportunity for people to take advantage of special deals," said Mr Arthur. "In terms of the deals that hotels are offering there is a wider scope than ever before to get people spending and to make sure the money keeps coming through tourism. "Some of the biggest and best hotels in Australia are offering some great deals at the moment and we encourage people to take full advantage of them.
"Next year there is no guarantee that they will be around."
