SOUTH African Airways country manager Vincent Mupwaya has said Zambia has recorded an increase in the number of tourists who took flights to Zambia during the World Cup.And Mupwaya said South African Airways was organising 15 top tour operators from Nigeria to come and sample tourism in Zambia.During a media breakfast held last week at Southern Sun, Mupwaya said the number of tourists mainly came from German, Australia and Netherlands for day trips.
He added that Zambia remains an important route for the airline which has led to it coming up with new products meant for its different customers.
“We have Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) coming on board and are now upgrading to other products like ‘Voyage a Mile’, which allows our customers who travel with us for a particular period to gain some points,” he said.
Mupwaya added that the airline was also organising some tour operators from Nigeria to come and sample Zambian tourism.
“We basically chose Nigeria because it is a high end consumer of tourism, and we expect the 15 tour operators who will come to Zambia to help market Zambia as a tourist destination of choice,” he said. Mupwaya said other countries which are high end of tourism are South Korea, Asia and China who have been visiting Zambia over the years.
“Our unusual markets are South Africa, Britain and among others, and we would like other nationals to join in, hence our organising the 15 top tour operators from Nigeria,” he said.
Mupwaya added that though the financial crisis had affected their bottom lines, the Zambian economy had shown resilience and people had continued doing business.
“We however did not remove any flights from our routes but instead came up with new products to help capture new clients,” he said. “We spoke to different market segments like sportsmen, travel and conferences.”
Mupwaya said the airline had to look for new sources and managed to operate effectively and efficiently.
