Both the Federal Government and the United States (U.S.) have issued new guidelines to cargo flights to Nigeria from the U.S. The idea is to forestall the importation of dangerous weapons, goods and other contrabands that are likely to be shipped into the country.A top official of Nigerian Customs Service who pleaded anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the matter told The Guardian at the weekend that the decision was taken after security report indicated that some Nigerians were trying to import dangerous items and fake electioneering materials into the country in readiness for next year’s polls.
The source disclosed that immediately the Federal Government received the security report, it unveiled fresh rules on goods coming into not only the U.S., but other countries.
The U.S. is also said to be concerned about elections in Nigeria and is ready to support the country to achieve free and fair polls next year.
