A strike ballot by Unite has been postponed to allow cabin crew to vote on a new offer from British Airways. The airline made the offer last week in a fresh attempt to end the long running dispute that threatened to bring more strikes during the summer.
The revised proposal is intended to address cabin crew concerns about their future earnings, including a new top-up payment to guarantee that existing crew will not lose out on route allowances when newly-recruited crew begin flying in the autumn. The offer also includes a two-year pay deal from February 2011.
Although the union has not formally notified the airline of its decision to postpone the strike ballot, it is expected that a consultative ballot for members of Unite will open soon, run by the independent Electoral Reform Services. Cabin crew who are not members of Unite are being invited by the airline to accept the offer on an individual basis.
BA comment:
We have changed our offer in line with feedback we have received from crew. Our offer is fair and reasonable and provides a genuine opportunity to end this dispute.
