The Egyptian Airline on yesterday announced it would commence flight operations between Abuja and Cairo from June 1. Egypt Air Area Manager Kano and Abuja, Wael Fouad announced this in an interview with Daily Trust yesterday. He said every week there would be two flights from Abuja to Cairo – on Mondays and Fridays – in addition to four flights from Lagos and five from Kano to Cairo already observed every week.
He said Egypt Air is the first Arab carrier and that it could extend its operation to hajj airlift if given the opportunity by Nigerian government. He said yearly they airlift about 20,000 passengers from Kano and 14,000 passengers from Lagos to Cairo who are mostly patients that travel for medical treatment and some are students that go for studies in Cairo. "The opening of the air routes between the two capitals is part of measures being taken to strengthen existing trade links between the countries.
"This latest operation would stimulate tourism, trade and economic relation of both countries," he said. Fouad said the commencement of its Abuja-Cairo flight was scheduled for June 1. He noted that the airline had in the past three years operated five flights a week between Kano and Cairo and four flights between Lagos and Cairo. Fouad said the Nigerian aviation authorities have offered the airline all the facilities needed to operate its new flight between Abuja international airport and Cairo airport.
