British Airways to suspend Dhaka-London passenger flight

DHAKA: British Airways has decided to suspend its Dhaka-London passenger flights from March 28 next year, said an airline official. The decision has been taken as the route was not making any profitable contribution to the business.

“The decision to suspend flights between Dhaka and London has been a difficult one to make …however, the route is not making a profitable contribution to our business and we are unable to sustain it,” said Amanda Amos, British Airway’s area commercial manager for South Asia, according to reports published here today.

After quarter of a century, there will be no passenger flights from London Heathrow to Dhaka after March 28 next year, the BA said, but cargo business will continue.

“We will continue to offer a cargo operation, using connecting flights via the Middle East,” the BA official said.

The civil aviation ministry officials were quoted saying to a bdnews.24, a local news agency, that they were aware of the decision but the British Airways had earlier referred to poor runway condition for the suspension of the service.

“During the last six months, the British Airways has been informally telling us about the possible suspension of its services because of poor condition of our airport taxiway,” chief adviser’s special assistant on Civil Aviation Ministry Habib Jamil told the agency. But statement released today by BA did not refer to the runway conditions.

British Airways runs commercial passenger flights between the two capitals since the 1980s and currently it operates three direct flights on Dhaka-London-Dhaka route in a week.
