British Airways surprised the market when it revealed this week that traffic in July actually lifted by 1%, which resulted in a load factor increase of 3.1% to 84.6%. Premium traffic continues to drop, and British Airways notes that while yields may be uncertain, overall traffic figures over the coming northern summer months should perform better.
“Underlying volumes and seat factors stabilised during the first quarter and are expected to improve in the peak summer months,” said British Airways in its statement. “Yield uncertainty continues to make revenue forecasting difficult.” British Airways reports that traffic comprised an 11.0% decrease in premium traffic and a 3.5% increase in non-premium traffic. Coupled with a capacity decrease of 2.7%, a rise in load factors was achieved. This comes after an April to June quarter loss of GBP106 million, British Airways’ biggest loss figure in 22 years.
