American Airlines said Tuesday it asked U.S. officials for permission to add flights to Brazil in place of slots that Delta Air Lines is giving up.AMR Corp.’s American Airlines said it could use the openings to fly nonstop between Miami and Brasilia beginning Nov. 18, and between Dallas-Fort Worth and Rio de Janeiro.American already applied for other Dallas-Rio frequencies, but so did another carrier, and American fears the selection process could take months.
American filed the request with the U.S. Department of Transportation. The airline already plans to fly daily between New York’s Kennedy Airport and Rio de Janeiro starting in November.
Shares of parent company AMR Corp. fell 16 cents, or 2.2 percent, to $7.10 in afternoon trading.
