Air France KLM, the largest airline in Europe, said on Tuesday that they will postpone the delivery of two Airbus A380 planes, which come after recent delays of ordered planes from Boeing. So far, however, they are not planning any cancellations of their recent purchases.
Many airlines are looking to reduce capital spending and preserve money while the global economy crushes the demand for air travel. Pierre-Henri Gourgeon, the Chief Executive Officer of Air France KLM, said that they are to move their schedule mainly after the delivery of their sixth or seventh plane, which should create some savings on this year’s and next year’s down payments.
Air France KLM has already postponed the delivery of about half their order of Boeing 777s, which consists of 20 or more mini-jumbos. Gourgeon said that they have moved the delivery of 10 Boeing planes by a year or two so that they decrease their investment in the fleet to what they need or cannot avoid. He added that this is more about moving orders than canceling them.
Meanwhile, the airline also said that they are reviewing the potential of making an offer on Czech Airlines. Gourgeon, said that they are watching the dossier closely and will announce something soon, according to a Dow Jones Newswires spokeswoman. The spokeswoman also added that Gourgeon said the carrier understands that the Czech government is searching for a buyer and that the planned privatization may be of interest to Air France-KLM, because Czech Airlines is a partner with the carrier in the Skyteam airline alliance.
