Irish airline Aer Lingus (ISE:AERL) denied having discussed a possible merger with Air France-KLM, The Irish Examiner wrote Wednesday (8 April 2009). An insider, however, said that the senior management of the two carriers met in Paris two weeks ago and expected the government and shareholders to support Air France becoming a major shareholder of Aer Lingus.
The Financial Times wrote yesterday that the board of directors of the Irish company is discussing strategic options with Goldman Sachs including an alliance with Air France, Lufthansa or British Airways. The Irish carrier’s chairman and current chief executive, Colm Barrington, said at the end of 2008 that the company was seeking a "friendly investor who will take a majority stake in the airline".
