BA and Qantas fined in Australia

British Airways and Qantas have been fined by the Australian competition authorities for their roles in an international conspiracy to fix air cargo charges.

Both carriers have already been fined heavily by the US justice department for their cartel activities in the cargo sector and have had former executives jailed. British Airways has also been fined both in the US and the UK for its role in a separate conspiracy with Virgin Atlantic to fix fuel surcharges on long-haul passenger fares.

Qantas said yesterday it had agreed to pay a fine of A$20m (£8m), with BA paying A$5m to settle the investigation by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. The fines are still to be ratified by the federal courts.

The Australian watchdog said it was continuing to investigate other airlines, some of which were assisting voluntarily, while others were not.
